Dr. Mathur stressed that recognizing the early warning signs of a heart attack is crucial. If a person experiences severe chest pain or pressure, difficulty breathing, excessive sweating, dizziness or weakness, or pain spreading to the left arm, shoulder, jaw, or back — these can be clear symptoms of a heart attack. In such cases, immediate action is the first and most vital step.
She advised that if a heart attack is suspected, the person should be made to sit comfortably, kept calm, and not allowed to panic. It is extremely important to call an ambulance (108) or nearby medical assistance right away. If the patient is conscious and has been prescribed aspirin or nitroglycerin by a doctor, the medication can be given. Keep a constant watch on the patient’s breathing and pulse, and if breathing stops, a trained person should begin CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) immediately.
Dr. Mathur also issued a clear warning about actions to avoid in such situations. The patient should not be given water, food, or cold drinks. One should not attempt to drive the patient to the hospital — it’s safer to wait for the ambulance. The patient should be kept in a semi-sitting position rather than lying flat, and chest pain should never be ignored. “Every second counts during a heart attack,” she said. “The sooner the treatment begins, the higher the chances of survival.”
She further added that correct first aid in a medical emergency like a heart attack can make the difference between life and death. Therefore, it is essential for everyone to know how to act wisely instead of panicking in such situations.
