Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease (HFMD) Spreading Among Children – City Hospital (A Unit of EMC Hospital)

Gurdaspur, July 26, 2025 – A contagious viral infection is rapidly spreading among children in recent days, identified as Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease (HFMD). This infection primarily affects young children. In an effort to raise awareness, Dr. Ajayeshwar Mahant, senior pediatrician at City Hospital (A Unit of EMC Hospitals), shared essential information about the disease.
What is HFMD?
HFMD is a common but highly contagious viral illness caused by the Coxsackievirus. It is most prevalent in children under the age of 5, although adults can also contract the disease. The infection typically leads to rashes or blisters on the hands, feet, and inside the mouth, along with other associated symptoms.
Key Symptoms:
- Mild to high fever
- Sore throat and general discomfort
- Painful sores or ulcers inside the mouth
- Rashes or blisters on hands and feet
- Fatigue and reduced appetite
How HFMD Spreads:
HFMD spreads mainly through direct contact with an infected person. The virus can be transmitted via:
- Sneezing or coughing
- Saliva or nasal discharge
- Contaminated surfaces or objects such as toys, towels, and utensils
Treatment:
There is no specific antiviral treatment for HFMD. The infection usually resolves on its own within 7–10 days. Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms:
- Paracetamol for fever and pain
- Adequate fluid intake to prevent dehydration
- Soft, cold, and easy-to-digest food
- Rest and sufficient sleep
- Mild mouthwash or gel to soothe mouth sores
Prevention Tips:
- Wash hands regularly with soap
- Keep children away from infected individuals
- Avoid sending children to school, playgroups, or daycare during infection
- Do not allow children to share personal items
- Consult a doctor immediately if symptoms appear
Dr. Ajayeshwar Mahant’s Message:
“HFMD is a rapidly spreading illness among children, but it is generally not serious. With timely precautions and home care, children recover quickly. Most importantly – awareness and hygiene are the keys to prevention.”
Stay alert. Stay safe. Prioritize hygiene to protect your child’s health.
