Amritsar, May 17, 2025 – In a significant step towards promoting public health awareness, EMC Hospital, Amritsar organized a special awareness program on the occasion of World Hypertension Day. The aim of the event was to educate the general public about the dangers, symptoms, causes, and preventive measures associated with high blood pressure (hypertension).
Renowned cardiologist Dr. Sanjay Gupta addressed the attendees and described hypertension as a “Silent Killer” – a condition that can cause severe internal damage without showing noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Dr. Gupta elaborated on how today’s modern lifestyle—marked by poor dietary habits, lack of exercise, stress, sleep deprivation, smoking, and alcohol consumption—has contributed to the rise in hypertension cases. He emphasized that in developing countries like India, hypertension has reached epidemic proportions and affects people across all age groups.
He urged the audience to adopt preventive measures and highlighted that hypertension can be effectively managed and even prevented with timely care. Key recommendations included:

Reduced salt intake
A diet rich in fruits and vegetables
Weight management
Stress reduction
Routine physical activity
The event saw enthusiastic participation from the attendees. After Dr. Gupta’s talk, an interactive Q&A session was held where participants asked health-related queries and received valuable guidance from the expert.
