Precaution Today, Protection Tomorrow – Cervical Cancer Prevention Is Possible: City Hospital (A Unit of EMC Hospitals), Gurdaspur
Amid the rapidly increasing cases of cervical cancer among women, Dr. Riya Mahajan, Senior Gynecologist at City Hospital (A Unit of EMC Hospitals), Gurdaspur, has urged women to become more aware and proactive about their health. She stated that with timely identification of symptoms, regular screening, and proper treatment, cervical cancer can be prevented and effectively controlled. Awareness, she emphasized, is the strongest weapon against this disease.

Dr. Mahajan explained that cervical cancer develops in the lower part of the uterus and is primarily caused by infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). In many cases, this infection does not show clear symptoms in the early stages, which puts women at risk without their knowledge. Therefore, regular screening is extremely important even in the absence of symptoms.
She warned that early signs of cervical cancer should never be ignored. Abnormal vaginal bleeding, bleeding between menstrual periods or after sexual intercourse, and bleeding after menopause can be key warning signs. Paying attention to these symptoms in time can be life-saving.
Dr. Mahajan further added that foul-smelling vaginal discharge, persistent pelvic pain, pain in the lower back or lower abdomen, and pain during intercourse may also indicate cervical cancer. If such symptoms persist, it is essential to consult a specialist immediately.
Highlighting the importance of screening, she said, “Testing is the first step towards prevention.” Regular Pap smear tests and HPV tests can help detect cervical cancer at a very early stage. All women above the age of 21 should undergo these tests at regular intervals, regardless of whether they have symptoms.
She also informed that HPV vaccination is a safe and effective way to prevent cervical cancer. The vaccine works best when given at a younger age, but adult women can also take it after consulting their doctor. Vaccination combined with regular screening can significantly reduce the risk of this disease.
City Hospital (A Unit of EMC Hospitals), Gurdaspur, has appealed to all women to prioritize their health, make regular checkups a part of their routine, and never ignore any unusual symptoms.
“Be aware today, stay safe tomorrow – defeat cervical cancer in time.”
