EMC Cradle: A Life-Saving Triumph for Mother and Baby in a Critical Placenta Percreta Case
EMC Cradle, Amritsar, once again showcased its excellence in advanced maternal and neonatal care when Dr. Monika Maheshwary and her experienced team successfully managed a highly complex and life-threatening obstetric emergency, ensuring the safe survival of both mother and newborn.

Setting another milestone in the field of medicine, the hospital successfully conducted a highly complicated and high-risk delivery. A 37-week pregnant woman, who had previously undergone two cesarean sections, was rushed to EMC Cradle in an emergency condition diagnosed with Placenta Percreta — a severe condition where the placenta penetrates the walls of the uterus and invades the bladder, posing grave risks to both mother and baby.
The patient was admitted with heavy bleeding from the uterus (“bleeding per vaginum”). Given the gravity of the situation, Dr. Monika Maheshwary immediately decided to perform an emergency cesarean delivery. Due to the anticipated complications, the possibility of a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) was discussed with and consented to by the patient beforehand.
A special multi-disciplinary team, comprising obstetricians, surgeons, anesthetists, cardiac intensivists, and neonatologists, was assembled to manage this high-risk surgery.
During the operation, a healthy baby was delivered and promptly handed over to the neonatal care team. However, due to uncontrollable bleeding from the uterus, an immediate hysterectomy was performed. Care was taken to preserve both ovaries to maintain the patient’s hormonal balance in the future.
Thanks to EMC Cradle’s state-of-the-art in-house blood bank, six units of red blood cells and four units of fresh frozen plasma were transfused without delay during this life-saving surgery.
Post-surgery, the mother was shifted to the ICU where her condition rapidly stabilized. Within just 24 hours, she was declared out of danger and moved to the general ward on the fourth day. After a full recovery, she was discharged from the hospital in a healthy state on the eighth day. Follow-up during her 12th-day OPD visit confirmed that she was completely healthy.
Mrs. Samiksha Arora, Director of EMC Cradle, commented:
“At EMC Cradle, we are fully equipped to manage even the most complex medical emergencies. Our hospital boasts a team of highly experienced specialists, advanced surgical equipment, fully-equipped operating theaters, and a dedicated blood bank — all of which make life-saving operations possible. Our foremost priority is always the complete safety and well-being of both mother and child.”
Dr. Monika Maheshwary added:
“This was an extremely challenging case, as Placenta Percreta is a life-threatening condition. However, with meticulous planning, the hospital’s advanced facilities, and swift decision-making, we successfully saved both the mother and the newborn. EMC Cradle remains committed to managing complex cases to the highest standards.”
This remarkable success once again reaffirms EMC Cradle, Amritsar’s leadership in delivering world-class maternity and neonatal care, ensuring the best medical support and safety for every mother and child.
