E.M.C. Hospital, Amritsar: “A Healthy Heart Begins with Balanced Cholesterol”
E.M.C. Hospital, Amritsar’s senior cardiologist, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, emphasizes that in today’s fast-paced and stressful lifestyle, heart diseases are increasing rapidly — and the primary cause behind this surge is cholesterol imbalance in the body.

Cholesterol is an essential fat required for the production of hormones and the formation of cell membranes. However, when its level exceeds the body’s needs, it can become a major threat to heart health. Dr. Gupta explains that cholesterol is of two types — HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein), known as the “good cholesterol” because it helps remove excess fat from the blood, and LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein), known as the “bad cholesterol” because it deposits fat in the arteries, obstructing blood flow.
He further elaborates that for men, HDL levels should be above 40 mg/dL, and for women, above 50 mg/dL, while LDL levels should ideally remain below 100 mg/dL for a healthy heart. The total cholesterol level should be under 200 mg/dL, and triglycerides should be below 150 mg/dL to ensure normal heart function.
Dr. Gupta also points out that unbalanced diet, physical inactivity, smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, and mental stress contribute to an increase in LDL levels. He advises people to bring positive changes in their diet and lifestyle — avoid fried and fatty foods, and include fresh fruits, green vegetables, whole grains, and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Regular exercise, yoga, and meditation help keep the body active and reduce stress, thereby maintaining healthy cholesterol levels. Avoiding smoking and alcohol completely is also vital for heart health.
He strongly emphasizes that “Taking care of your heart is not a choice, it’s a priority of life.” Everyone should undergo a lipid profile test at least once a year to detect any imbalance early.
E.M.C. Hospital, Amritsar, is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities and experienced specialists, offering comprehensive services including cholesterol screening, cardiac tests, ECG, echocardiography, and angiography — all under one roof.
