Preventing Cold and Staying Healthy – Be Alert to Hypothermia | EMC Hospital Green Avenue
Hypothermia is a severe condition caused by extreme cold that lowers the body’s temperature and can pose a life-threatening risk. This condition occurs when the body temperature drops below 35°C. Symptoms of hypothermia include physical exhaustion, tingling in the limbs, difficulty speaking, drowsiness, and in severe cases, coma. If left untreated, hypothermia can lead to death.
Initial Treatment

To handle hypothermia, the affected person should immediately be moved to a warm and dry place. Wet clothes should be removed, and they should be dressed in warm clothing. They should then be given warm water, soup, or other fluids to provide internal warmth. However, avoid excessive movement or jerking the person as it could worsen their condition. If their breathing or heartbeat stops, cardiac response procedures must be followed.
Preventive Measures
To protect against hypothermia, always wear warm clothing before stepping out in extreme cold, and avoid spending prolonged periods in cold air or water. Engage in physical activities to keep the body warm, but avoid overexertion. When entering deep water, wear a life jacket and exercise caution.
At EMC Hospital, our internal medicine department is well-equipped to handle such conditions. Dr. Haseeb Mahajan, as a consultant, and Dr. Rishabh Arora, our director, consistently emphasize the importance of staying alert to severe conditions like hypothermia. Their guidance ensures that we are always prepared to safeguard your health effectively.
