ALL ABOUT HMPV IN A BRIEF NOTE- Dr. Amarnath, EMC Group of Hospitals

Amritsar, EMC Hospital:
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory pathogen first identified in 2001. It is a leading cause of acute respiratory tract infections, particularly in children under five and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of HMPV include upper respiratory tract infections such as fever, cough, sore throat, and nasal congestion. In severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia, exacerbate asthma, or worsen chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Newborns are particularly vulnerable, and infections can be more severe in this group.
Diagnosis and Treatment:
HMPV is primarily diagnosed using RT-PCR, considered the gold standard, and rapid antigen detection methods. Currently, no specific antiviral treatment is available for HMPV. Management focuses on supportive care, including oxygen supplementation, hydration, and symptom-based treatment.
Recent Developments:
The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a significant rise in respiratory infections, including HMPV, since December 2024. However, experts believe that the likelihood of HMPV causing a pandemic akin to COVID-19 is low. The virus has been circulating for decades, and most people have some level of immunity to it.
